Keep on writing, and my advice on demos is to keep'em CHEAP and BASIC. More than a few hundred sunk into a demo is just crazy, since most likely none of the folks involved will actually be on the finished product.
I've spent a lotta years perfroming my own tunes, had some fun and even a little success, but I always had a plan and job to fall back on.
