About

I'm a member of BMI...I have written songs and performed everywhere between here and Nashville for almost 30 years.
I gave up performing a few years back. Lost my voice to a viral infection in my vocal cords but I still write when I feel the need. The last band I was with was the Austin Shafer Band which was composed of a few old buddys of mine who played many years with George Jones, Conway Twitty, The Wilburn Brothers and Johnny Paycheck and my best buddy and drummer (writing partner and singer) Robert Elliott. (Great guys... my brothers. I can never repay them for all they did for me).
I'm just looking to make new friends and possibly find someone (an artist or publisher) looking for some hardcore and traditional country songs. Though my dream of recording them has been laid to rest, I'd still like to maybe help someone else who needs a song and maybe see one recorded.
You want to know more just read below or contact me.

More useless facts about me.....

I was born and raised in southern Kentucky..in the Cumberland Gap area to be exact. (Daniel Boone territory). Basically grew up poor on a river bank. (I guess we were poor...everyone in our neck of the woods was from the same background and circumstances so there wasn't any thing to compare our situation to...lol). Dad was a hard worker. Spent all his life (with the exception of a couple years up north) working in the coal industry. Mainly a truck driver, later in life a Baptist minister. We didn't have a lot, the coal business didn't pay very much in those days but we had a party line telephone, three hot meals a day and a lot of mamas' love to go around. (Nothing like a mamas hot biscuits to a hungry little belly or a mamas kisses on a skinned up knee...lol). Not much to do where I grew up but play music in front porch bands and build fast cars. ( None of us ran moonshine....lol..but I did know a few who did..lol). My dad played bluegrass music with his relatives when the family got together on special occassions and at 14 he bought me my first guitar from a Western Auto store...lol...wasn't expensive but it might as well have been a Martin to me...lol. Don't get me wrong, I love bluegrass music, but for some reason (thanks mostly to my grandfather on my mothers side) at a VERY early age, I was drawn to traditional country, so dad's dream (if any) of me following in his foot steps was lost...lol. I began praciticing and writing those kinds of songs and sneaking out of the house every friday and saturday night to go sit with the local pickers (mostly drinkers...lol) so I could learn the country licks and the rest of the time I spent with that old guitar on my back walking the old dirt road behind the house strumming it and sitting on the river bank practicing.

I have always been a country fan. I teethed on Porter and Dolly, Loretta Lynn, The Wilburn Brothers etc. As I said, my mothers dad introduced me at a young age to Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, etc. As a young man I got into Haggard, Jones, Tillis, Owens, Paycheck, especially Waylon and Johnny Cash. As I said, it all started as a hobby but I caught the bug and by 18 I was performing with my first band, Ezrath Stonne (a front porch rock band), then by 21 I was with The Dixie Brothers Band (country/southern rock) and not long after that I graduated completely to honky tonk/traditional and outlaw country. I really got into the OUTLAW COUNTRY thing...lol. Back then it wasn't just for show....I really lived it. BUT, God is good and merciful and thanks to his patience and a few smacks upside the head, I quit drinking and smoking a long time ago and quit the 'wild' life...like some words in a song of mine: "...I traded in my Jack Daniels, for Hush Puppies and tv..."...lol.

As a young man I LOVED country rock!..The Eagles, Pure Prairie League, etc...but the Eagles especially and to this day, I still love to break out the cd's and listen to it.

Along with my writing partner and friend of 40 years, Robert Elliott (who also was the drummer and harmony singer in just about every band I had), I performed the better part of almost 30 years, cranked out some good songs at writing sessions with Rob and loved every minute of the whole experience of music! Our last band was composed of a few old buddys of ours who had the experience to cover up my lousy picking and singing...lol..they had played in the road bands and studio bands of some of the legends I grew up listening to, ie; Jones, Paycheck, Twitty, The Wilburn Brothers, etc. and these guys were my brothers! We played everywhere and loved it. But, (as it often does when you finally start getting a break) bad luck came calling. The lead guitarist had bad cardiac problems, the steel players wife developed terminal cancer and I (like an idiot) refused to listen to my doctor and cancel a few gigs and a minor throat irritation became a viral infection in my vocal cords and took my singing voice.....so....here I am, still hangin' in there and still trying to hawk a few songs. I belong to BMI but they told me and Rob a couple years ago that though the songs were good, they were just too country for todays country music...lol. Oh well, I ain't gonna change so whatcha gonna do?.....

These days I spend on the front porch looking out over the holler (hollow for you city folks..lol) and sipping coffee. Do I miss it?..HECK YEAH!....who wouldn't miss the clothes, the stage, the crowds, the attention, the music and musician/artists friends....but life changes and I suppose I probably wouldn't fit in there nowadays anyhow..lol.

I'll post some songs later..the only ones I have were recorded just after I lost my voice and they suck. Working on rebuilding it enough to put some on a demo.

Thats me in a nutshell..............

Oh yeah...I don't have the beard and mustache any more so if that guy owed you money, I'm not the same guy....lol.....
