Fall Tour 2011

We just recently got back off the road after a 22-day, 4,000-mile, 8-State tour of the West, visiting family and seeing the sights.
Our trip took us from Portland, Oregon, to Sisters, then on up to Yakima, Washington, and Wenatchee (where I performed at a private house-party), before heading east to Whitefish, Montana.
We were hoping to drive the Going to the Sun Highway through Glacier National Park but, for the second time, our plans were scuppered!  Last time it was snow on the road - this time they were digging it up!
From there we headed south to Cascade, Idaho, and on to Emmett and Twin Falls, where we were able to visit the Shoshone Falls.
Next stop was just outside of Salt Lake City, from where we headed south to Arizona and the Grand Canyon, South Ridge.  Wouldn't you just know?  We had been driving for days in glorious, hot, sunny weather - until we hit the Canyon .... and it clouded over and RAINED!
On the return trip we drove through Las Vegas but couldn't find anywhere to stop the car and take pictures, so we headed north to Reno, Nevada, and Virginia City.  That's when our luck really turned sour!
We had planned to go to Crater Lake, then across the Coastal Range and up Highway 101 but, when we woke up in the morning in Reno, we could see a fresh layer of SNOW on the mountains!  There was heavy cloud over Crater Lake so, after driving through snow showers to an overnight stop at Klamath Falls, we by-passed it and headed straight back to Portland.
Crater Lake, like the Glacier, will just have to wait for another year!
