THE BEATLES TO RELEASE EARLIEST RECORDINGS ON THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY
By My Country SpaceAVAILABLE NOVEMBER 8th (Time Life)
Signed Contracts and Personal Biographies Handwritten by Each Member in 1961
Fairfax, VA
(September 29, 2011) --- 50 years after The Beatles first entered a
recording studio, the complete collection of those tracks will be
available for the first time in North America
when THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST
RECORDINGS: 50th Anniversary Edition, is
released to stores November 8th on Time Life. The
2-CD set comes with a specially-designed book that is a historical
trove of concert and intimate photos taken by Astrid Kirchherr and
others who were with The Beatles during the early days of their
career. The book also includes handwritten biographies
by each member of the group, signed contracts, original artwork
taken from posters and records, and text by Hans Olof
Gottfridsson, who has spent years researching this period of the
Beatles’ career. In North America, it is generally believed that the Beatles’ recording career began on Capitol in 1964. Few know that it actually began on the German Polydor label in 1961. As Gottfridsson notes in the book for THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS, Polydor executive and big band leader Bert Kaempfert discovered the group in a German nightclub, signing them to his own company and then releasing the songs through Polydor. The night they signed the contract at Kaempfert’s kitchen table, the four Beatles wrote brief autobiographies, reproduced here in their original handwriting. Through a combination of music, photos, documents, artwork and history, THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS beautifully captures John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison just before they rocketed to international stardom. The earliest days of The Beatles have never been revisited in such detail.
The set includes every recording they made for Kaempfert and Polydor in 1961 and 1962. Multiple versions have been released throughout the past several decades – some in mono, some in stereo – each with distinctly different sounds. Most notably, the US versions of these tracks were overdubbed with another guitar player and drummer in an attempt to mirror the edgier sound the group had evolved into, unbeknownst to American fans at the time of their release in 1964. All versions of every track, including mono and stereo mixes, are included in the double disc set, remarkable in their difference but all bearing the same unmistakable sound of a wholly new kind of band.
Many of the Polydor tracks feature Tony Sheridan on lead vocals, a decision made by Kaempfert. However, John Lennon sings lead vocals on “Ain’t She Sweet,” and George Harrison plays an instrumental, “Cry For A Shadow.”
THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS: 50th Anniversary Edition is a remarkable story, told through music, mementos and words, of a band on the cusp of changing music and pop culture forever. The collection is a fascinating and comprehensive view of one of the most important yet overlooked moments in Beatles history.
"Ocean Wind" - or, why it takes a village, alt country music edition
By Lost ColtWhen you form a band, each individual member brings something to the table. Rick and Conrad were veterans of the Ottawa music scene, having played in several bands (in addition to Lost Colt, Conrad is also the drummer of record for Ottawa's awesome Big Soul Project, which among other achievements played the main stage of Ottawa's Bluesfest in 2010) and contributed to numerous recordings (Rick's resumé includes albums with Lot 49, Naked I and Adam West). As noted last week, Bruce showed up with a long resumé as a solo recording artist and musician. Dan, meanwhile, had played a grand total of one gig with the RadMen (more on them next week), and...hmmm....
"I knew nothing about being in a band," Dan says. "I showed up in Ottawa with a stack of cassettes full of demos I'd made in my parents' basement using a Casio keyboard and a cheap karaoke machine with a double tape deck. But the big problem was I didn't know how to communicate how my songs should sound...because I didn't have much sense myself. All my demos were layered mono recordings so if they were going to be listenable at all I had to keep them simple, so I never gave much thought to arrangements."
Quick musical chemistry with Rick and Conrad (and, from 2008 to 2010, Marc Fonda) helped: Dan would introduce a song by playing a couple of verses, then count the guys in and within a few takes they usually had something to work with.
But then there was "Ocean Wind." "Rick was convinced it was a great song, but the arrangement was going nowhere. And I was at the stage where I was just sick of playing it."
When Bruce joined the band, Rick and Dan each gave him a CD full of demos to study up on. "I was trying to figure out how I might fit in," he says. "'Ocean Wind' was the first tune of Dan's that hooked me. In my mind, I could hear a low guitar framing the melody, and siren voices. I came to practice one day saying 'We’ve got to do Ocean Wind, I’ve spent all week working out the guitar part.'”
Home run. "Bruce had this idea, like 'Ocean Wind' should be like a Roy Orbison song in a David Lynch movie, or something," Dan says, "so he showed up one day with different backing vocal ideas and a new lick for the guitar solo and we played it and I was like, 'this is why I need to be in a band.'"
With the arrangement conundrum finally solved, Dan could focus on why he wrote the song in the first place. "It's basically a sketch of one of my favourite places, Old Orchard Beach in Maine. When my brother and I were kids that was our family vacation spot, pretty much every year from 1986 until I left home. The lyrics are on the nose, you're walking on the beach, but it's my beach, my happy place. So I love that we're playing the song, and playing it well."
"Ocean Wind" is the second of six tracks on Lost Colt's EP, Who is Lost Colt. You can hear the EP in its entirety at reverbnation.com/lostcolt, or you can purchase MP3 versions of the songs at reverbnation.com/store/index/artist_1870878 .
Next week: "Counting Up."

AUSTRALIAN TRIO, THE McCLYMONTS, MAKE SECOND OPRY APPEARANCE SEPTEMBER 30
By My Country Space
The Girls Made Their Grand Ole Opry Debut On
September 9
Nashville, TN
- (September 28, 2011) - On September 30, Australian country
music trio, The McClymonts, will perform for the second time this
month and in their career, at the Grand Ole Opry. Their debut at
the world-famous venue was on September 9. The girls have
garnered critical and popular acclaim in their homeland of
Australia, but nothing compares to receiving such wonderful
recognition as not only being invited, but being invited back, to
play country music’s most famous stage. Brooke McClymont had this
to say: "When we were told that we had been invited back to
perform at the Grand Ole Opry for the second time within a month,
we thought they were joking. The first experience was so awesome
and so special. It was a lifetime memory to treasure. We
all feel so honored to be coming back again. We can't
wait."
Australia's hottest female group, The McClymonts, released their album, Wrapped Up Good, in the U.S. on August 23rd (BSM Music). On August 22, USA Today listed the album on their “Playlist” as a pick of the week. Wrapped Up Good was produced by some of the top players in the music business, Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift's Taylor Swift, Fearless, and Speak Now) and Adam Anders (Fox TV's Glee). Last year, their album was #5 on the Australian country charts, outselling Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. For the past four years, this sister trio won Best Group at the Country Music Awards of Australia. At the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards, they picked up Best Country Album in 2008 and 2010. In 2010, the girls opened for Jason Aldean's fall tour. Their single, “Wrapped Up Good,” is currently at #44 with a bullet on Music Row’s Country Breakout Chart and the video can be seen on national networks GAC, CMT Pure, and TCN.
Throughout the summer, The McClymonts have toured and visited stations throughout the U.S. to support the debut of their album. They are continuing the momentum this fall. On September 29, they are doing a Satellite Media Tour from Nashville, and in October they are making stops in New York (Oct. 16-17), Los Angeles (Oct. 21 – 24, 29) and Las Vegas (Oct. 25-28). Please contact Montine Felso (listed below) to arrange a visit with The McClymonts.

AARON LEWIS’ ‘Country Boy’ Certified Gold, Debut Solo Single From ‘Town Line’ Sells Over 500,000 Copies
By My Country Space
AARON LEWIS has experienced a breakthrough year as a solo artist. The singer/songwriter/guitarist’s debut solo single “Country Boy” has just been certified gold, selling in excess of 500,000 copies. The song is featured on LEWIS’ critically acclaimed debut solo EP TOWN LINE released earlier this year on Nashville’s R&J Records.
"This is a really pleasant surprise for me," says LEWIS of the gold certification for “Country Boy.” "It's the first thing I recorded as a solo artist and it’s just a very honest record about who I am. It's great that so many people related to it. I'm looking forward to getting back into the studio to make a full record."
On “Country Boy,” LEWIS gets a little help from legends George Jones and Charlie Daniels, striking a balance between classic and modern country, as LEWIS tells his story like never before.
Not only does the video include clips of Jones and Daniels in the studio, but it also draws from LEWIS' own family archives, giving a glimpse into his youth, home and passions. The video has been viewed over 10 million times on CMT.com and YouTube (http://youtu.be/vsQzw_Ax8Cw) alone. The single and video also earned the Staind frontman his first two CMT Music Award nominations: “Collaborative Video of the Year” and “USAWeekend Breakthrough Video of the Year” (awarded to the best video from an artist's major breakthrough album). Audiences across the country have also experienced LEWIS’ riveting live version of the song and other highlights from TOWN LINE like “The Story Never Ends” and “Massachusetts” at LEWIS’ ongoing series of acoustic shows.
Produced by legendary Nashville producer James Stroud and LEWIS, TOWN LINE debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and #7 on the Top 200 Albums Chart.
TOWN LINE has also drawn critical praise from a wide variety of writers, including PEOPLE’s Chuck Arnold who said "He proves to be a natural on nostalgic ballads like 'The Story Never Ends,’ (3/14/11)," while ASSOCIATED PRESS’ Michael McCall wrote, “He injects a flavor of his own into a polished, commercial country sound in a way that could win over country fans who've never heard of Staind (2/28/11).” COUNTRY WEEKLY’s Jessica Phillips noted, "The songs here are rich with imagery, coupled with soulful arrangements, and should appeal to fans of Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum (3/7/11)."
