Universal Studios, the film studio responsible for country classics such as The Coal Miner's Daughter and Tender Mercies, has been making news with its recent hire: new President Peter Levinsohn. While Universal brought us films with some of the best country soundtracks, it's been a while since we have seen iTunes update its library with some of those classics. For example, music from the classic country film Tender Mercies is still not available on iTunes. Levinsohn, Universal’s new hire, has been known to bring entertainment and technology together in his career, so we may see this change.

If the new blood at Universal can team up with other people who have shaken things up at the company, such as Film Executive Marc Shmuger during his 12 years at Universal, we may be seeing easier access to their films' music in the future. In the meantime, let's rediscover the movies that brought us a few country gems over the years.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

The most recent flick Universal released with classic country tracks would have to be the 2000 summer hit O Brother, Where Art Thou? The full motion picture soundtrack contains a Norman Blake country cover of the well-known single You Are My Sunshine. It also delivers tracks like Down to the River to Pray by Alison Krauss and I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow by The Soggy Bottom Boys.

The Coal Miner's Daughter

Much less recent, but no less memorable, is the popular film The Coal Miner's Daughter, released in 1980. The album itself starts out slow and steady with The Titanic by Sissy Spacek. It goes on with more upbeat country hits by Spacek such as I'm a Honky Tonk Girl and You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man. The album sprinkles a few tracks by Beverly D'Angelo in between the many Spacek tracks. These include Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight.

Tender Mercies

While also released in the '80s, the Academy Award-winning western Tender Mercies has music that is harder to find than the others. Even so, it contains a track worth the search. The film features the track You Are What Love Means To Me, which was lauded as one of the most lyrically beautiful country songs in film at the time. It was a staple in the film’s story, and some of the lyrics perfectly describe the character's journey in the film.

I recently finished a 5 year endangered runaway crusade and now planning a tour to bring awareness to charities that benefit youth and teens in crisis. This is my brainy idea to help in some way. CMT artist ERIC DURRANCE, founder and frontman for TOBACCO RD BAND, is proud to announce the official release of the band's smokin'-hot new single, "THAT'S COUNTRY" featuring COLT FORD.

Billboard Country News Editor Chuck Dauphin says this about the just-unleashed TRB-Ford collaboration:

"'That's Country' could very well be the modern-day anthem for the 18-34-year-old demo. Tobacco Rd Band has a great sense of musicianship that comes across ALMOST as well as their exuberance and their energy!"

Released by Big Southern Entertainment, "That's Country" is available now for digital download via iTunes. But even before its official Feb. 5 release, the feel-good track had generated  a buzz, with early adds at country radio's 103.1/The Wolf in Tallahassee and 106.1/The Twister in Tulsa.

"The audience response to this song has been amazing,” Durrance says. “Everybody loves the song and they’re singing along by the second chorus. … Our hope is that Colt fans will appreciate it and become our fans, too. We feel like his fans are our kinda people. If you like Colt Ford, you're probably gonna like Tobacco Rd Band.”

Following the single release of “That’s Country” via iTunes, the Coors Light-sponsored Tobacco Rd Band--who just earned the 2013 Tally Award for "Best Group"--will release a “six-pack” EP for fans. Fans also can also watch for Durrance and TRB to be the featured cover story in the February issue of Nashville Music Guide.

More about Eric Durrance & Tobacco Rd Band

CMT touring artist Eric Durrance formed the Tobacco Rd Band in 2010. The Tallahassee-born, four-piece band came out of the gate running in and accomplished more in its first year than what some bands spend a lifetime trying to do.  Powered by the songwriting of hit-tunesmith Durrance, the soulful guitar playing of Lex Vance, the solid bass playing of Aaron Halford and the feel-good rhythm of drummer Joe Markham, the Tobacco Rd. Band has been a hit with country fans since the first time they stepped on stage. Earlier this month, TRB was named "Best Band" in the 2013 Tally Awards.

Hey proud to announce the release of my latest single, "Sometimes You Gotta Get Away." Recorded at the Sound Emporium (Nashville, Tenn), the song was written by hit-makers Wynn Varble ("Have You Forgotten," "Waitin' On a Woman," "I'm A Little More Country") and Don Poythress ("I'm Little More Country," "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind"). This new single was produced by Grammy nominated, Eric Paul (Townes Van Zandt Poet: A Tribute to Townes Van Zandt). "Sometimes You Gotta Get Away" is available on CDX #553 August 27, 2012) and through PlayMPE. The single was rolled out to radio, nationally as well.

Growing up in the small west Texas town of Big Spring, Texas, the son of a hard working welder and oil refinery worker, my life was set to music at an early age, and this song takes me back to that time - to where I have been and what I am today. That is why I am so excited about recording this song. I think everybody has to Getta Away Sometime and be thankful for today. Hope you enjoy and let it take you away.
