Portage musician to perform for sick children

— Portage musician George Bollman Jr. will be traveling a long way to do a good deed.
Bollman will perform for patients and their families at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
St. Jude’s has been named the nation’s top children’s cancer hospital in 2010-11.
Bollman will perform from 10 to 11:45 a.m. July 29 in a common area of the hospital.
Bollman, 37, who calls himself a one-man band, started singing country music with his father.
“We played guitars together,” Bollman said. “We did do gospel music in the past, and I still do.”
He got his opportunity to perform by contacting the hospital.
“I logged on to St. Jude’s website and filled out the application,” Bollman said. “About a week later, I got a call from St. Jude’s setting up the time.”
A hospital administrator said Bollman was required to send a sample of his music and was approved to make an appearance.
Bollman is eager to perform in Memphis because it may be a chance to do some good and boost his career.
To make the most of this opportunity, he will be pulling out all the stops.
“I am going to do about 13 songs,” he said. “I have to play for nearly two hours.”
Whatever the outcome, Bollman said he is happy to continue what he’s been doing because he loves performing.
“If I make it in country music or not, I’m still having fun with my fans in my home town of Portage,” he said.
Bollman’s priority is helping the children diagnosed with cancer.
“I am so glad I could do this for such a good cause because God gave me the ability to sing and play,” he said.
