Heading for first like a freight train, Derek is no stranger to bright lights and screaming fans, once a minor league baseball player with the Kansas City Royals. A close call at second had Derek struggling as three serious injuries forced him into an early retirement.
“One minute I was standing in the halo of stadium lights, the next sleeping on the roof of my truck in a restaurant parking lot. I was exhausted and needed a new path so I bought a guitar and started singing and writing songs. My new passion had just begun.”
Sliding into third and spending several years as a bread delivery truck driver, singing nights and weekends, raising his son DJ and never giving up, led Derek to new heights with a record deal and a devoted fan base.
“I never quite understood that God working in mysterious ways thing until I woke up and realized that if I had made it in baseball that I probably would have been a lousy dad. I would have missed out on the most important time of my boy growing up and would not be standing here today with a shot at a career in country music."
Derek, a southern California native, played not only around the Torrance area where he grew up; he also worked extensively throughout Las Vegas including opening shows for the “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno for nearly three years at The Mirage Hotel and Casino. “I can watch Clint Black or Alan Jackson and I can watch Derek and go Okay he seems right in there with those guys,” says Leno, “he plays every gig like it’s the Grand Ole Opry, and I think that’s the key.”
Derek is now a Texas resident who recorded his CD "Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time” between Nashville and the legendary Rosewood Studios in Texas where LeAnn Rimes also did some early recordings.
“We released a couple of songs to radio and continue to play a lot of live shows,” says Derek, “what we’re doing right now in Texas is beginning to take off. We’re really starting to build a nice fan base.” Derek has proven to be a strong presence on any stage he performs on, whether he is the main attraction or the opening act.
Derek was influenced by singer/songwriters such as James Taylor, Johnny Cash, and Jim Croce but his biggest inspiration and all-time favorite is country legend Garth Brooks. “I got a surprise phone call from Garth a few years back. During the phone call he talked about his trips to Nashville and his break at the Bluebird Café, and the night he was signed to Capitol Records. It was just very inspirational to me. It took me to another level of confidence where I am inspired to keep climbing this difficult ladder.”
Stealing home to a heroes welcome, Derek is excited about his future and a second chance at pursuing his dreams. Currently, he has released his third single, “Here", which can be heard playing on country radio across the nation.
“I made a decision about what I wanted to do, and that’s country music. I love what I am doing right now and could not imagine doing anything else.”
